3 Situations Where A Business Can Reap The Rewards Of A Mezzanine Floor

Mezzanine floors can be found in the oddest of places these days. When I first heard of mezz flooring a picture of a Greek mosaic sprung to mind. In reality a mezz floor is simply a steel construction above an existing ground floor. The purpose of the mezzanine floor is to create space on a budget.

One place you will find mezzanine flooring is in a factory. The first image I have in mind is on the television series ‘Coronation Street’. In the factory mezzanine flooring is built on the top for extra storage. This is a primary example of how the flooring is used in a factory. With the cost of running a factory, space is at a premium. A mezz floor allows for area for storage, freeing up space for a productive environment.

Mezzanine flooring can also be used for storing every day items. Believe it or not, mezzanine flooring is even used for general commercial storage. You can store archived files or large expensive equipment. Mezzanine flooring has even been used to house sports cars. This is perfectly safe, so long as the predetermined maximum weight is not exceeded. Mezzanine floors are often fitted with lifts to enable to safe loading of equipment.

It isn’t just businesses that do this for themselves as well. Smart entrepreneurs have sussed they can buy warehouses these days on the cheap. Flooring can be placed in a renovation Depending on the size of the warehouse, you can have many separate floors. Potentially you have thousands of square feet of space. Security will be tight with entry by PAC card only. Security guards would be employed 24/7. You can then rent the space out month to month. The costs are minimal due to the cost effectiveness of mezzanine flooring, and they stand to make a large profit.

Mezzanine floors can be used to create extra work space. When you build your floor you can install safety rails to keep people on them safe. When a floor is designed, the maximum loading weight is very carefully calculated. As long as that weight isn’t exceeded, with safety rails the floor is very safe.

So now you know a few uses for mezzanine flooring. They save the hassle of having to move premises or extended your existing location. Value will be added by having the floor installed. So if you have a warehouse or premises, what are you waiting for?

What Requirements Do Business Owners Use Mezzanine Floors For?

A mezzanine floor is a great avenue through which you can expand space for your business without permanently raising operation costs. Around the world businesses are looking for all kinds of ways through which they can reduce costs and maximize on output from their resources. Employees are taking on multiple roles, companies are also venturing into multiple fields along with many other measures aimed at ensuring there is no wastage of resources. The idea of having mezzanine floors is actually inspired by storied buildings though these ones are built internally. The intention being to productively use the open and idle spaces that buildings with high ceilings have but is often unused.

In the past mezzanine flooring was mostly used as storage. Some of the things that were stored there include products for dispatch and collection, office supplies, machine parts, tools and many others. However, this has progressively changed and today mezzanine flooring is used for all kinds of purposes. There are a good number of reasons as to why businesses are putting them up. These reasons include, expanding office space. The executive team of the company can actually work from these offices since you can have them finished to very high standards. You could also use the mezzanine floor to house specialist teams such as quality control. This will work especially well for teams that require minimum disturbance when working.

Security related teams can also make excellent use of mezzanine floors. The elevated position gives those working in security and easier time when monitoring the rest of the floor. It is also an ideal location for security related controls such as alarms, vault access, main door and gate controls. In the event of having a security emergency, the team working in the mezzanine floor is less vulnerable and can easily respond to the crisis as well as get external help.

Another use of mezzanine flooring is to create room for staff welfare. Being non production activities means you would not want them to take up your main floor space but still require them to take care of your staff. The space could be for taking breaks and resting, games and exercise, reading area and so much more. Having such facilities on a mezzanine floor ensures that you do not loose valuable space used for operations while keeping your employees happy.

Photography studios as well as printing shops will often have their darkroom or design studios on a mezzanine floor. This arrangement ensures that the main floor is full accessible to clients as the shop while those working on projects are able to concentrate without disturbance. Clinics will also have their laboratories situated in the mezzanine floors while the doctors work on the main floor. Aside from reducing costs and saving money, having these services together with the business offers amazing convenience especially when compared to the option of having multiple locations. Mezzanine floors are still largely used for storage even today though as you can see, they are now useful to businesses in many other ways.

Leyland Business Install New Shelving Systems and Mezzanine Floors

Leyland Business Install New Shelving Systems and Mezzanine Floors

However, it’s this summer that has marked the arrival of Steven Livesey’s new business Blink Photo to the Kings Court development opposite the Commercial Transport Museum in the town centre.

More used to the sunny shores of Mediterranean islands for his fashion & footwear shoots, Steven chose Leyland to set up his new ambitious venture due to the ease of transport networks and general ease of doing business.

Blink are in the process of converting a divided old mill unit into a state of the art commercial photographic studio. They’ve been pleasantly surprised to find that help was at hand on their doorstep with several local businesses partnering them in creating a working environment from an empty shell.

The major works were carried out by local Leyland company NSI Projects, who specialise in fitting out of empty building shells with mezzanine floors, partitioning, ceilings and shelving systems. Their brief was to create studios, offices and storage areas on top of a mezzanine floor that effectively increased the productive footprint of the building by approximately 20%.

Unfortunately the need for the fit-out coincided with a major foreign assignment that required Steven and his team to relocate to the Balearics for three weeks, tantamount to having the builders in whilst you go on your annual holidays – not without its worry!

Said Steven “the shoot was actually less glamorous than it might have looked, with the client going for a more edgy feel – meaning I was lying in the gutters of Palma, Majorca at all times of day and night trying to get the right shots! Meanwhile, I had a major fit-out going on hundreds of miles away that I couldn’t directly supervise”

“Thankfully, due to the time put in pre-planning with the team at NSI, and their desire to keep me fully informed by e-mail and mobile at every step of the project, I came back to a unit transformed in a very short timescale from an empty unit to one being well on the way to the working space I need. We’re really positive about growing our business from our new Leyland base”.
